Mona Lisa is a man, an Italian art historian has claimed. Silvano Vinceti, the head of the National Committee for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, believes the painting like several of Leonardo’s works were inspired by Gian Giacomo Caprotti.
This boy, known as Salaì, played the role of friend, helper, student and quite possibly, lover to Leonardo da Vinci. In fact, the painted figure is androgynous and sources tell of one incident during Leonardo’s youth in which he and three other men were accused of committing sexual crimes with a male prostitute, but the charges were dropped for lack of evidence.
Although most of Leonardo’s personal life remains unknown because he guarded information about it, we can recognize the same likeness in most of Leonardo and his school’s portraits that is certainly not casual. Why? Personally, I agree with Lillian Schwartz. She split the faces of the Mona Lisa and Leonardo's self-portrait down the mid-dle, adjusting the sizes and juxtaposing them so that one side of Mona Lisa's face matched Leonardo's. The result was the picture on top-left.
